Paranoid? The boy has done everything in his power to make himself a target. It's perfectly sane for him to expect that someone would be motivated to kill him.

I mean, if someone in my family kept killing other family members, I might have to start thinking long and hard about how or when I might be next...and what I should do to prevent that. And there's only one valid response to THAT. I can't imagine his family members aren't thinking just that, too.
