I used to live in Augusta and the biggest draw for this to become a cyber security leader, as mentioned in the article, is Fort Gordon, home of the Signal Corps, and titled US Army Cyber Center of Excellence. The post has communications and intelligence units from all 4 main branches of the service and an NSA complex within the post, in fact there has been talk of renaming the base to a joint base the past couple years. Unfortunately, Augusta is a poor city, despite being the home of The Masters, and has a lot of crime. The county as a whole, qualifies for county wide free lunch in the schools, and the city council at one time seriously considered voting part of the city to be officially labeled a "slum area" to qualify for federal funds for rebuilding some parts, which should be embarrassing for a city. The county currently is in turmoil over the lack of a 911 ambulance contract because they want to under fund the current provider; this has historically been a challenge for EMS providers for many years. Most of the growing communities are actually outside Augusta, especially adjoining Columbia County. Just across the river is Aiken County, South Carolina, which used to be pretty nice from what I understand but Augusta's crime problem has made its way over there in recent years. I still own a house there and I am hoping the expansion of Fort Gordon and the opening of a new cyber security university will bring more people to the area so i can sell my house. Maybe this would be a good thing for Augusta if handled the right way, but Augusta also has a problem of the city council not being able to get a lot done because of various issues.

I just left the Augusta area after 8 years. While your post is accurate for richmond county it is a poor representation of the CSRA. Columbia County controls 2 thirds of the land bordering the base and include half the gates. It is the fastest growing county in the state and richest per capita. It also has a low crime r as te given its 500 population. My home sold within 7 days with aver as ge time on market at 12 days for the county as opposed to 200 days for richmond.
