Somewhat solid, but I didn't appreciate all the overt anti-Trump spin on issues. But then again, we are talking about HuffPo. The author holds up JFK as the epitome of calm and professionalism during the Cuban Missile Crisis. I've done numerous research papers on the CMC. JFK was a loudmouth "bully" who almost got us into WW III. If not for his diplomats who covertly met with Soviet diplomats in darkened cafes, the peaceful resolution we all know about would not have happened. It's convenient when you can be ignorant of/ignore/erase the facts of history.

As for the cat and mouse games between US and Soviet/Russian forces, it's been going on for decades. Submarines from both sides had been playing "Marco Polo" underwater all during the Cold War. A few collisions damaged boats from both sides, and yet, no WW III. Soviet/Russian submarines have even surfaced in the middle of carrier battle groups, as a proverbial "finger" to the anti-submarine forces of the battle group. Again, no WW III.

I think that the piece is passable as fiction, political slant included, but sensationalizing events that have been happening for decades is amateurish. Yes, the safeguards may have been removed since the Cold War, but I am sure that if the two world leaders wanted to get in touch with eachother, they will manage to do so.

JFK, son of a bootlegger whose Father got rich on it, mingled with the Mob and admired Hitler as ambassador to England. A liberal darling though that we cannot discuss openly in a public forum without following the rules of PC. Joe Kennedy needed a Son in Federal office as much as he needed the ambassadorship to help erase his criminal past and restore his respectability..........not much different than the GodFather attempting to go legitimate by divesting himself of criminal enterprises after he was wealthy and buying into legitmate ones.

It's much more likely to start with three large fishing vessels or cargo ships in international waters. One off the east coast, one off the west coast, and a third in the Gulf of Mexico. What's special about them is they are carrying basic scud missile launchers with nuclear payloads. The missiles are fired straight up into the atmosphere and boom instantly >2/3's of America is without electricity, transportation, and food.

MSgt James Mullis - To effect such widespread EMP effects one needs to life a far higher yield thermonuclear weapon than anyone has placed on a scud to date, Sandy :)

1LT Sandy Annala - It would need to be a better device than say North Korea has. Which, the last I heard, have been mostly low yield fizzles. But who knows what Iran's weapons will be like. Because unlike North Korea, Iran has one of the best educated populations in the world.

Good article, but would have enjoyed more if it read as a news report rather than a chapter from an upcoming novel.
