I remember going through the drills in elementary school - duck under your desk if you see the flash of light. When I was old enough to grasp what The Bomb was, I distinctly remember thinking, "what use would getting under my desk be?"
I like how they used humor to cope with the very real threat of mutual destruction. Sometimes, it's all we have.

I appreciate the humor. To us Cold Warriors, we always had that idea in the back of our minds that nuclear holocaust could happen. Fortunately, we got to see the fall of the USSR instead.
