This is arguably one of the most important firsts in spaceflight, yet we don't hear much about it. Gemini 3 was the first spaceflight in which the crew could translate altitude and direction. Mercury and Soviet spacecraft could only change orientation; roll, pitch, & yaw. In an era in which we thought we were behind the Soviets we were actually in the lead in some quiet ways.
