SGT (Join to see) I think a lot of these are coming to light with the growing "civilian" popularity of rucking.
I remember inn tech school i made a point of keeping myself, and making sure my airmen were hydrated. We didn't have food, but I'm not sure they allow that even today.
In police academy we had camelbacks. Since I was the fastest in class, I got lucky enough to carry the big pack with the first aid and snacks in it.
I wonder how the packs of today compare to lovely A.L.I.C.E.? Lol

Good question. I forgot to mention ALICE. I also only had one in Basic and don't remember much difference.

SGT (Join to see) - i remember in police academy throwing on that pack and thinking i was forgetting something - it was so light. But everyone else looked at me with pity thinking i was going to be too weighed down.

SSgt (Join to see) - I think that's due to the Alice being smaller, more durable, and less flimsy than a plastic frame with zippers and straps all over.

Remember the ALICE came in 2 sizes. Some jobs got the smaller one and some the large. I personally think the MOLLE is horrible. The platic frame breaks during ABN drops, there are far too many straps that hang down and need to be secured, nor does it have the smaller pouches that the ALICE had, which were very useful despite being small - easy access for magazines, wet weather gear, gloves, etc... and the fact the ALICE is so modifiable.
One thing I did do was put the MOLLE straps and kidney pad on my ALICE pack, this did make it even better. Thicker and wider straps, more padding for the waist. Quite comfy.
Then I bought a Tasmanian Tiger ruck and the rest is history......
