It is no joke George. When I start my 1966 Mustang GT I got a massive headache from the exhaust fumes it takes a while to warm up doesn't have the Instant Power like my V6 and my 2015 Dodge Challenger it doesn't get the good gas mileage either and the car is nowhere a safe. The body styles nice but when I took a test drive in the new Challenger and realized that a V6 3.6 liters basically 220 cubic inches is putting out almost as much horsepower as a 400 V8 I was satisfied.

LTC (Join to see), in the late sixties-early seventies, Vestavia Hills, AL (a well to do suburb of Birmingham) started using Oldsmobile 4-4-2s as patrol cars. They couldn't catch the speeders (mostly youngsters) with traditional patrol cars! At the same time, the Alabama Highway Patrol experimented with the muscle variant of the AMC Javelin for the same reason. Their standard patrol cars couldn't keep up with GTOs, SS396s, etc.!

LTC Stephen C. - very interesting sir when I lived in La Palma California my mailman had a 1969 Olds 442 with the 4 speed manual and he went to the last day of racing at Orange County International Raceway in the early eighties they demolish the Raceway and built a Leisure World what a pity! If the police were using automatic for four twos they were only 325 horsepower with a smaller cam if they had a 4-speed automatic 4-4-2 than it was 360 horsepower! I also wondered if they used low gears or high gears I think the 3.42 gear ratio was original on the 442 olds but you could have ordered it with low gears like 4.11 for drag racing. I wonder what they ordered? When I was in Utah in 2004 I saw Z28 IROC police cars. Utah does not mess around!

LTC (Join to see), I never saw the inside of an AL State Trooper's Javelin, but I did see the inside of a Vestavia police Olds 4-4-2, and it did have the heavy duty four speed shifter (I think Hurst, but I can't be sure). Couldn't tell you about the gear ratio, though!

I prefer the classics- ANYBODY can go out and buy a new car, it takes a special breed to love a car so much that you are willing to do what it takes to keep it on the road 40+ years after original production. Jeff and I go to car shows and I laugh at these guys when they enter brand new cars and we pull up in our road runner, their jaws drop- as it should!
