The memorial to the 54th Massachusetts Regiment that stands directly across the street from the Main entrance to the Massachusetts State capitol building near a main entrance to the famed Boston Common. This was the unit Sgt William Carney, MOH recipient served within.

A view in an earlier day of the monument to the 54th Massachusetts Regiment at the edge of Boston Common as seen from the front area outside the Massachusetts Capitol building. That monument still is on display in that very visiable location.

SFC James Welch - Yes, they did ! shows how ignorant some of them are with this monument to the bravery and sacrifice in combat of a black Regiment in the civil War.

During our summer trip to Boston my Grandson and I got to see this Memorial ourselves, along with Bunker Hill, the USS Constitution, the re-enactment of the Boston Tea Party and Museum among others. These were all very worthwhile in the time it took to see them, Plymouth Rock on the other hand was, shall we say, lackluster?

The 54th Mass. is in the movie "Glory" which is one of my favorite movies on the civil war. While Sgt Carney is not the focus of the movie his character is featured in it, and this post just gave him that much more credit towards himself and the rest of his unit.

I realize the film was obv good in its fashion, certainly...I just wish it'd been done with punctiliously exact historical accuracy, it's just the way I think about such things...e.g., Col. Shaw was actually married, Sgt. Carney wasn't expressly mentioned, per se...it's small aspects like those that make for true movie accuracy, and actually enhance the presentation, regardless of what some reviewer might think, though, as I'd said, that's obv just my thought about the whole thing, I suppose....
