First in service I was diagnosed with Major Depression and Bi-Polar and given Lithium that made me literally puke and it was very demoralizing. There was not such thing as talk therapy. The therapy was talking to the pill bottle. Then somehow I ended up on depression meds paxil. Oh yes paxil for a few years up and downs. It was great for a minute. I was like WOWOW. the pill of amazing ability. But then inside who wants to be tied to a pill. It was very confusing internally not being able to regulate my own mental and physical health. If you stopped paxil for even a few days there were violent puking phase withdraws. That is not to mention the sexual side affects not feeling stimulated like you used to. When you are in our mid to late 20s and already having sexual side affects due meds that is mentally disturbing. It sucks. I went through 3 of those because I would miss my doctor appointment for refill. I finally said f this and gave up the pills and said I would rough it alone. I suicide self injury 5150 and they then tried anti psychotics I read after reading the patient records on me. I was unaware I was even on those. Wow. Anyways I have to say in the end just having a friend to talk to would of sufficed. But in the 1990s in the Navy I was not getting that at the doctor office on duty. I got a lot of note taking.

All very true with many people. The 'side effects' you speak of are particularly depressing stressing and maddening.

I think they rush to Market too soon with Many Medications and wait to long on others. Always good to question but if someone comes up with even a Halfway decent Chemical Treatment for Alzheimer's I'll start Popping It Like Candy knowing that, that is My Family Curse. The Genetic Boogey Man. The Devil for My Kin.

I'm hosed. That's all I gotta say.Because some of us have brain malfunctions that impact mood. Living without medications listed can cause a return of seizures, sleep issues, panic and high levels of anxiety that yoga and exercise don't impact (if one finds the motivation to do any of that when they are suicidal.) Articles like these are terribly misleading. They don't actually know if there is a correlation between drug or depression and later increase in incidence of Alzheimer Disease. I suggest that the SSRI class of medications can be very effective for those with chronic or relapsing forms of major depressive disorder, anxiety, panic disorders, OCD, bipolar disorder, etc....... If you refuse the medications yet live depressed, insomniac, or manic you are fooling yourself. Quality of life is not on an unknown future, but living for the present. I'm not saving myself for later, I want to enjoy each day as much as possible now.
