I also thought there was a ban on them , sounds like a lot of retraining for the Engineers

most interesting... I thought it was also retired because of the UN ban on the use or em/deployment of permanent in-place Land Mines ... or something to that effect ... one of Bill Clintons moves

I believe you're correct, that's why we use an, "electronically deployed munition system" currently. A large amount of spider systems are set up to claymores, grenades, illumination munitions, etc. and are controlled by a computer held by a soldier to detonate on command. Minefields with more control as it were.

SSG (Join to see) - it is the same essentially, you set the timer by the DCM to say 8hrs and they will detonate in place leaving no minefield in tact for anyone to run into. That is why they are not on the ban, like I said I had one of two that actually crossed and was in the initial push into Iraq and they are finicky as are the DCM and cables but hopefully soldiers still remember how to use them.

My unit has actually been training on these for years. We went to JRTC last May and they told us we were the first unit to deploy the Volcano successfully in something like a dozen cycles.
