Yes, big data. Ubuntu/Canonical does some sneaky things for data mining. Now may be a good time to make a few back-ups for the Linux kernel. Linus Torvalds can't live forever. MS is in WeChat, LinkedIn, and Skype. Along with you, I'm suspicious about the "why", especially since MS hasn't GIVEN one that I believe. Meanwhile, MS employees on RP are very quiet about such discussions. I doubt that will change.

Microsoft is a heavy contributor to the Linux Foundation. For instance about 40% of the Microsoft Azure Cloud relies on Open Source Projects to accomplish various functions internal to deploying and managing cloud hardware and software resources. Microsoft contributes and utilizes these projects at a fairly massive scale.
