In a split-second a suicide bomber detonated his yellow Mercedes truck bomb before reveille even sounded in Beirut. The suicide bomber’s target was the Marines of the Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines Regiment sleeping in the Marine Barracks. Hezbollah and the Iranians were perfecting a new tactic, one which has caused destruction and pain in numerous countries as terrorist groups have copied and modified this asymmetric manner to attack a stronger enemy.
October 23, 1983 is unlike any other Sunday. On that day, thirty-three years ago, 241 Americans lost their lives in an instance when the suicide bomber drove his bomb into the Barracks. Those robbed of their lives that day included 220 Marines, 18 Navy Sailors, and 3 Army soldiers. The carnage that day in Beirut touched families across America. Among those killed that day were 9 Marines from my home state of Rhode Island. These young men had their lives cut short because of a terrorist. These Marines included Cpl. James Silvia of Middletown, Lance Cpl. Thomas Julian and Cpl. Stephen Spencer of Portsmouth, Cpl. David Massa of Warren, Sgt. Timothy Giblin of North Providence, Cpl. Edward Soares Jr. of Tiverton, Cpl. Rick Crudale of West Warwick, Cpl. Edward Iacovino Jr. of Warwick and Cpl. Thomas Shipp of Woonsocket.
Two years ago, U. S. Federal District Court Judge Royce Lamberth entered an Order and Judgment holding “Iran accountable for its cowardly support of terrorism. The Judge concluded that Iran must be punished to the fullest extent possible for the bombing in Beirut on October 23, 1983. While some in our government and those seeking to become part of the Executive Branch continue to foster a better relationship with Iran it appears they have forgotten what occurred in Beirut thirty-three years ago. Maybe they have forgiven those that not only caused this harm but also so many harms and even today still are a threat to the United States. Iran’s fingerprints are on so many attacks on Americans to include Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards-Quds Forces supplying Explosively Formed Penetrators (EFPs) to target U.S. military up-armored vehicles in Iraq. The IRGC armed Iranian proxies like the Mehdi Army and Badr Corps in Iraq with EFPs to target U.S. military personnel. There are numerous other examples of Iranian hostility towards the United States and our citizens.
More recently, on January 12, 2016, two US Navy Riverine boats were seized by Iranian Navy units and their crews were held for 16 hours. Just this month, the USS Mason, a US destroyer heading north in the Red Sea was fired upon by Houthi rebels with Iranian supplied missiles. As we remember those who lost their lives in Beirut thirty-three years ago we can never forget that Iran has targeted and still continues to wage a silent but lethal war against the United States and its interests. And our leaders should remember this as they deal with a country still waging a "quiet war" against us.

We lost Marines Army Navy and I believe some French peacekeepers as well in a separate bombing let us not forget them. I knew a Staff Sergeant in the Army who was a corporal let us not forget them. I knew a Staff Sergeant in the Army who was a Corporal in the adjacent building Marine in the basement when the bomb blew. He survived unscathed. That same prior service Marine told me that Captain Dale Dye. He survived on skate. That same prior service Marine told me that captain Dale die the famous military liaison for movie studios was the public affairs officer for the Marine Corps then. Let us not forget them and let us not forget that Iran was behind this bombing

Thank you Sir, Yes we tend to think of Beirut, as just the bombing and forget it was a conflict, some what like today. I knew some older Bees when I first joined, that had been there, and they told me they got bombed, and small arms fire all the time while they improved force protection at all sites.

Never forget the ROEs... the Marines weren't issued ammo. Even those on duty had unloaded weapons. 241 American lives well & truly WASTED. Semper Fi...

I suggest reading the book ROOT, my roommate USMC Sgt, tells me that its pretty well spot on, as he served there prior to this, that was back in 85-87 when I met him, from what he tells me it was not only ROE but PC that created the perfect storm

Never forget Hezbollah was behind this and Hezbollah is paid by Iran and Hezbollah is also destabilizing Lebanon never forget
