While it's a brief article (since I didn't want to subscribe), I have a few thoughts:
A war in Europe is always possible. Just like a war in the US is always possible. The embers of war are always smoldering somewhere. It's practically impossible to have that many people living in a small area and not have political/socioeconomic/theological discontent. At some point, someone will always get froggy and decide to lash out.....and if the conditions are ripe, then war will soon follow.
As for having security with the giving up on certain rights...I agree. It's a yin/yang, tit for tat, cause and effect type of situation. One cannot have one without the other. Think about it. If you want more security from the bad guys, then you have to give up your rights to privacy in regards to letting big brother delve into your phone/internet records any time they want in order to try and find the bad guys that intend on doing harm to the US.

Highly respected point of view on this topic. The face of Europe is changing.

I don't believe so much that the face of Europe is changing, more so that Europe is morphing back into its pre-EU self. The wave of nationalism sweeping across most of Europe is in direct response to the immigration and monetary policies enacted by the EU's open border and trade initiatives. There will always be a segment that will stoke the fires of nationalism and attempt to blame domestic woes on "others <read> foreigners".
To ignore history is to ignore the wolf at the door.
