I've heard it suggested that dueling should be allowed. Possibly then the level of political acrimony might be lowered. Or, elections might become more entertaining?

These days, a duel need not end in death. Or, indeed, even bloodshed. Although perhaps it loses something in doing so. With shock blades and simunitions, the pain becomes real but risk to life and limb is minimized. Of course, as old as our current Presidental Candidates are, serious injury could still occur.

On the other hand, were we to allow dueling, other countries might reconsider how they deal with us. Consider "Cowboy Diplomacy" under Reagan... Even before he took office, attitudes changed with regard to how foreign powers dealt with us. Could allowing dueling bring some of this back? Certainly some food for thought.

CPT Jack Durish - Secret Service orders might complicate a duel. I haven't a clue what they are supposed to do if protected draw weapons on each other. Warmest Regards, Sandy :)

I agree that it has been worse in the past. However, this campaign is unusual for fifty years or so. We seem to be moving back in that direction with each side not only considering the other side wrong, but actually harmful or acting against the interests of the country. Not a great trend.

I suspect a lot of this is exacerbated by the prevalence of highly biased and quite frankly in many cases made up information, particularly on the internet. We now seem to embrace confirmation bias, immediately latching on to information that supports what we already want to believe with little or no critical analysis. Over time this will likely lead us back in the direction we were before which wasn't a great place.
