Explaining religion to atheists is like explaining sight to the congenitally blind.

I find it amusing the Major Fishkin participates in the religious debates since his practice is to block those that defend faith, thus creating an anti-theist echo chamber for himself. I find it cowardly that Major Fishkin takes shots at someone he has blocked.

Capt Gregory Prickett I point out that your cited article that states that atheists know more about religion than the religious. Yet, with one exception (bread and wine), the examples listed are matters of history, not scripture, doctrine, or dogma. I doubt that the per capita knowledge of the "bread and wine" doctrine is significantly higher among atheists than Catholics. Should a geneticist be labeled as ignorant of genetics if she understands binomial classification and modern taxonomy, but does not know that Linnaeus wrote "Flora Lapponica"? or that he still used Latin naming because he had not yet developed binomial classification. (Yes I deliberately chose some historically obscure fact to support my point). That I know that bit of history doesn't make me more knowledgeable of genetics than a geneticist.

Capt Gregory Prickett - As long as a person is ethical and a good steward of what is in their sphere of influence, I don't care from where their morals come.

Capt Gregory Prickett - I am not sure what a fundamentalists is. But if I make a broad sweeping generalization, broad sweeping generalizations may have some basis in truth, but are generally not entirely true.

Some "Christian fundamentalists" may not be students of the Bible. Some may even hold dear, "Biblical Truths" that are not scripturally based. That does not mean they do not have a clue.

Ooooh, here comes MAJ Ballinger saying "Atheists are ignorant". Funny, we atheists think exactly the same of the die-hard true-believers.

The fact is, "None" is the fastest growing religious affiliation in America, and in addition to urban vs rural areas having a faster growth of "Nones", those same distinctions can be made of young vs old, college educated vs non-college educated, and I recall one study (I believe it was Pew, not certain) that showed a decrease in religiosity among people who had lived in more than one country over those who had never left their country of birth, which is surprising considering that Mormons tend to be extremely well-traveled and well-educated. I guess they (Mormons) are just too small of a group statistically to alter those trends.

I do notice as I travel the world that I feel more comfortable and "at home" as an atheist in almost any foreign city than I do in rural (and religious) America.
