They are around. Saw a panhandler in Pensacola, FL and he would go to the intersections with his sign for help and after the day, would walk over to his house....I've also seen those who are just wanting that last fix before they get help or just not want to help themselves.
I saw it in Norfolk and now I see in Indianapolis.
It's very sad

SGT (Join to see) - I see that here too. Good condition clothing, shoes, hair and facial hair in good condition. To be honest, people actually make more money panhandling than an actual job.
My husband did an experiment when he was 18. He went to a popular mall and asked people for a quarter to use for the payphone (when they were still around). He got about $75 in a couple of hours. If he kept up with it for an 8 hr period, he would have walked away with $300 for the day when someone working minimum wage (around 8.50/hr)...worked the same time and made $68.

PO1 (Join to see), I don't doubt he made a lot of money. But,I have a lot more pride within myself than to get on a corner and beg for money. I don't care who's out there begging. Just as long as they aren't representing them selves as a down and out Veteran. In fact I don't have enough guts to stand out there and take a chance on getting robbed, or shot, or both.

SGT (Join to see) - I've seen the signs that say "Homeless Veteran" and what not. I mean I feel bad that they, as people, have come to such a low they have to beg for money. While some are very honest and are out there, there are so many that will do this just because they don't want to work. It's very sad in both views.

It is sad that they are being used as a money collector for someone else. The ones I don't get are right there at the VA. I asked a guy, holding a DV sign once , if he wanted to get off the streets, I would take him to the VA and see what kind of help he could get, and I would try to help him through the system. He told me flat out no. He said he doesn't need any help from anyone. I don't know if he as a vet or not, but I tried. Most of the ones I come across don't want to engage in a conversation. About two months ago, not far from where I live, i was getting gas at a station on a busy corner. There was a rock fight going on between a male begger and a female begger. The female had been working that corner a long time and the male was trying to take it away from her. She got on her CELL PHONE, yes CELL OHONE, and made a call. Pretty soon a nice looking car showed up and two men got out of it. They went over and talked to the male, and I guess made him an offer he couldn't refuse. She got her corner back and he had to work the esplanade near the gas station. Between begging, they were shouting obscenities at each other. I kept waiting to see if any cops showed up, but they didn't. I thought it was funny. That proved to me they do work for someone, like a pimp, who controls them.

I proffer to homeless veterans-that seem to be genuinely homeless-my "God bless you(s)"; and/or I will buy them food. I don't carry cash.
I do appreciate it and love it when they are satisfied with my simple "God bless you".

SPC Margaret Higgins. Those guys don't worry about manners or being rude. They don't want to hear anything about doing better, or how to get off the streets. All they want is our money we work for, or receive because of a disability. They don't care. Thank you for your response and compliment.

SPC Margaret Higgins
SGT (Join to see) Keith, I want to thank you for your attempts at trying to help the homeless to do better; and for trying to get the homeless off of the streets. The homeless who don't respond to your advice/help-have the problem-not you.
Have a peaceful rest of your evening, Keith.

We have one here who drives a Lexus. He's been busted and moves from town to town, until the cops catch on and send him to the next.

He's got a big set, is all I can say. That's shoving it in the face that I don't have to work to be able to afford nice cars, or nice things. Makes my blood boil. I can't stand cheaters or liars.
