I was always struck with this artifact by the sheer incongruity of OTS obvious sophistication relative to its apparent date of origin...I mean, the sophistication is just way, way beyond what one might expect for such a time period, at least to me, you know?

Saw a great show on PBS 3-4 mos. ago on this mechanism, their still working on figuring it out.
