At the Arch in St. Louis, you have to be there really early. People "stake their claims" on the Arch grounds with blankets. There usually isn't one square inch of grass visible by sunset. It's truly awesome to lie on the slope near the river and enjoy the show right above your head.
Honolulu is fun too but your best bet is to go to the parking lot at Trippler. From that vantage point you can see 5 different firework shows at the same time. Plus you don't have to deal with the massive traffic jams afterwards.
