I was not a big fan of Gen Tommy Franks but thought Gen Petraeus was much better. From what I understand there were many in the Pentagon who were happy to see Gen Franks retired in 2003.

Gen. Tommy Franks, who led the successful Iraq invasion in 2003, has come in for his share of criticism for failing to plan sufficiently for the postwar phase. And I'm not 100% sure but think he was pushed out the door by the Bush Administration or maybe a scapegoat?? .

I'll yield to those who served with General Franks on this one..or who are much smarter than me and there's lots of those here on RP..

SGT John " Mac " McConnell - Yes, I was a 1LT and he was a LTC so we didn't socialize. The Brigade Commander was Wayne Downing who came to 1st AD from commanding a Ranger Bn and went to form the ranger Regiment after he left. We had brigade officers PT every month and some other events where officers would get together. Our brigade had 2 mech infantry battalions, one armor battalion and Franks' mechanized 155mm artillery battalion.
