Something I'd like to note here... In the United States in 2015, there were approximately 13,000 deaths attributed to guns including accidents, suicides and murders. That's a bunch of deaths from guns. But... During that same period, there were 598,000 deaths in the US due to Heart Disease; 575,000 deaths in the US due to Cancer; 138,000 due to lower respiratory disease... So, in other words, gun violence last year in the United States was responsible for only 1% of causes of death of the other 3 causes I just mentioned. And if we assume the same rate of death by firearm every day this year as Sunday (67 deaths this past Sunday), we would be looking at 25,000 deaths in 2016. Still just a drop in the bucket compared with the other causes of death. So, why are we so outraged about one cause of death but not these others? I mean really...

So you want me to die? If I cannot carry than surely I will die and therefore by extension you wish the death of me and my family. I think I will retreat to my safe space to get away from your micro aggressions ;)

The truth about gun violence -
From the last year that data was collected in 2013
33,636 fatalities due to guns - 21,175 were suicides -62% In the remaining 12,461 it is estimated that 80% of the fatalities are due to criminal activity. That's 9,969. That leaves 2,492 killed for personal reasons. In Chicago we are at 297 for gun related fatalities - 500 in total fatalities for the year however by tomorrow we will be at 300 as just about 2 people a day are killed in Chicago due to guns - As well Chicago and Cook country have a ban on assault riffles - its been in affect since 1993 - its called the Blair Holt Law. Out of all the in 2013 deaths due to guns, while not with 100% accuracy, its believed that only 4% where due to assault riffles. The interesting thing about 2013 is that 13 people where shot - luckily no one was killed and probably the reason it received little press - no shock value. We have 3 problems connected by the gun - 1) suicide - poor mental health care system in the US. 2) criminal behavior 3) mass shooter that is very much connected to mental health - Sandy Hook and Aurora shooters had serious mental health issues. Yes guns contributed to violence but banning guns does nothing in addressing the underlying issues - mental health care and criminal behavior. These issues will continue manifest and impact society in a negative way until they are addressed.
