I grew up near St Augustine in the 1950s/60s. That fort is one of my favorite places to visit. The walls, made from coquina, almost absorb cannonballs. Florida still paves their roads with it.

Yes shale is mixed in with tar to pave roads here. When I lived in MA. they used tar and stones.

Very cool place indeed. If I'm not mistaken the oldest church in Florida is there as well.
