I have a hard time understanding the long standing animosity between Russia an the West, the US in particular. Sure, they had communism. It was bound to fail. We should have just allowed it but we supported them in WWII (we provided the bullets and butter and they supplied the blood). I guess it just got to be a habit, keeping them going so we'd have someone to fight with. But communism, like every form of socialism, is predestined to fail. We should have let it. Then we could move on. As to Syria, maybe they did have it right. Honestly, it's hard to tell. All we know for sure is that we were wrong.

COL Ted Mc
CPT Jack Durish - Captain; One reason for "the long standing animosity between Russia and the West" is that the Russians still remember when "The West" invaded Russia after WWI.
Another reason is that "America" NEEDED to have an external enemy in order to keep its "War Economy" functioning. Can you imagine the state of the American economy if the amount of money being spent on defense spending wasn't being pumped back into the American economy?
During WWII, the US provided Russia with approximately $11,000,000,000 in "Lend-Lease" aid . The Russians spent approximately $192,000,000,000 on WWII. The US provided Russia with approximately 5.75% of what the Russians spent on WWII. [NOTE:- Statistically this would be a "one tail" issue and it requires getting about 10% for something to be "statistically significant" on a "one tail" issue. This means that another reason for "the long standing animosity between Russia and the West" is that America (and Americans) constantly deny the fact that the Russians would likely have defeated the Germans EVEN WITHOUT "Lend-Lease". [BTW:- The Russians paid the US the amount that the US government agreed was owing to the US as a result of "Lend-Lease". The US government charged interest on the amount owing under "Lend-Lease" and did NOT simply "give" anyone any aid.]
