Shirley Ann Jackson: Keep Your Eye on the North Star

Leadership- I find it interesting to see what some of the early influences on a leader, how they have developed their leadership style and the leadership lessons they have learned. This particular article reinforces some critical skills needed when there is a great deal of ambiguity. My top three takeaways are:

• The importance of listening carefully and understanding the other person. You have heard it many of times – “seek first to understand, then be understood”.
• The importance of empathy, especially in difficult times like transitioning from military to civilian careers.
• There are a lot of forces that can change your direction but keep your eye on the “North Star” to remind yourself why you are traveling down the path in the first place.
