The single best action I took when I got back from Afghanistan is engage in family counseling with the VA. Hearing your spouses thoughts reflected through a counselor is sobering and helped me understand what I needed to change.

Good article as someone who treats PTSD, I would like to remind all that treatment is safe and 100% beneficial.

I am partial to #1 Educate. A commander who fails to paint the picture of the battlefield is foolish. Education is the key to supporting the patient with PTSD. The commander should have empathy and sympathy in order support his soldier and work out a treatment plan to include preparing the soldier for the MEB and eventual discharge from the military.
