It is a pity, certainly, I should certainly think he would obv be most qualified to do it. There's an interesting account I'd read of the search for the Pres of Columbia Univ that ultimately led to Gen Eisenhower being allowed to do it before he was elected thereafter, if I can find it, I'll try to list it here, it should be able to be found using Google , I should think. I just bring it up as the circumstances merely struck me as rather analogous. My uncle, or one of tjem, my dad's sister's husband, was one of Eisenhower's radio operators in the 3118th signal svc battln or grp, who helped send out the telexmof the German surrender on VE Day, and swiped a copy lol, Gen Eisenhower personally handed him his Bach diploma from Columbia when he'd been there in the GI Bill, and remembered him slightly, from southwick house, the shaef HQ before the invasion , my uncle was always his unit's comedian, Gen Eisenhower was somewhat taken aback and nonplussed till he did actually recall my uncle as an NCO he'd seen during ww2 lol.
