I know there are quite a few veterans out there with awards that are not listed on their dd214. I had a medal missing and when I got out, I didn't bother fixing it till 20 years later. I've seen and talked to many who had the same happen to them. The orders just never showed up in their permanent file. So are we sure he never received those medals, or did the orders never make it to his permanent file?

Great question SPC Herbert Gray. Anything is possible when there is a clerk in charge of your papers. I was docked 10 days pay because the clerk had written I took 10 days excessive leave. I was actually in the hospital for 10 days. I discovered it after I was out, and didn't see anyway I could prove it. It didn't make me or break me but it's just the idea of a clerk could really screw up your records if they were too lazy to find the real reason, or had a bone to pick with you.

I was lucky, usually you have 3 years to get your records corrected. After 20 years, I had a heart attack and with my oldest becoming an Officer in the Army, I wanted to get it corected. I found my old Battalion Commander (LTC) who signed the paperwork, who was now a 3 star (since then he has retired). His staff helped me and I received an updated dd215 with the correction.

Personally, I would go off of the DD214. It's not like the military hasn't ever lost sht.

Doesn't matter misrepresented or not he did more than the person who wrote the story. Whether he had 50 confirmed kills or 5, he was out there.... He wasn't sitting behind a desk looking for the next big "scoop".

96 confirmed sniper deaths that saved untold lives. Leave the guy alone. This total BS. Even the Vietnam vet in charge of the hall of honor came out and said he's suspected Kyle didn't earn all of those awards. He said at the most is one Silver Star. So what!
