USAA, San Antonio Agencies Giving Homeless Veterans Help They Need

USAA’s pledge of $2.1 million in January toward eliminating veteran homelessness in San Antonio has helped more than 300 homeless veterans find housing. The funding has been used to locate available residences and provide move-in packages and support services.

“How we treat our poor and our homeless is a reflection of who we are,” says Craig Hopkins, a senior vice president for IT strategy, architecture and shared services at USAA. He volunteers with San Antonio Metropolitan Ministries (SAMM) and the city’s annual Point in Time Count, a census of the homeless. In March, he joined the board of the South Alamo Regional Alliance for the Homeless (SARAH), an umbrella organization for area groups serving the homeless.

“Many of us could be just one medical event or job loss from being in the same situation,” Hopkins says.

Michele Glaze, director of community advancement, leads USAA’s partnership with the Mayors Challenge to End Veteran Homelessness, a White House Joining Forces initiative.

“We want to help provide stability to those who have already sacrificed so much to serve our nation,” Glaze says.
