I have nothing against Harriet Tubman, i really am thankful for her place in history, but why are we making this change?

Because it is downright insulting that of all of our paper currency not a single note features a woman.

Why is everything all about equality now....I understand the reasons what we had in the 40s,50s,60s and so forth but this is getting waaay out of hand.

We redesign our paper money all the time. No reason the faces need to be the same ones when everything else changes.

SGT Jinger Jarrett - I disagree. Ben Franklin wasn't a president, nor was Alexander Hamilton. They were great Americans who made great contributions to our history. I personally find it insulting that a woman wasn't on a bill decades ago, but since we regularly update our currency and the $20 is scheduled for an update, why not update it to include a great American woman?

I was struck by this news as well COL Ted Mc. I know there has been discussion at a high level for a couple years now that the faces on the denominations are not diverse enough. The choice of Harriet Tubman allows the Treasury to check two boxes in one swoop - black and woman.
I expect the next change will be for an Asian American or Spanish-speaking American on a denomination.

SGT Jinger Jarrett - You do have a point. If we did start this when we were creating our currency and developed a way to change faces after an X amount of years. It's just all of a sudden with the change in the uniforms for female sailors, neutral restrooms and everything else. Not that change is a bad thing but sometimes you really don't need to change things.

SGT Jinger Jarrett - Sergeant; One of the "traditional" ways to design currency is to have the faces of either current or former heads of state on them. If the change was put off until 2020 (the currency would have to be designed and approved prior to that) the US could both "put a woman on the currency" AND follow the "traditional" rules by having Hillary Clinton on the $20.00 bill.

PS - I'm not being serious.

PPS - How about a list of the 20 greatest (dead) Americans with the list being updated periodically and the portraits selected at random? [Of course that would mean that Elvis Presley just might make it onto the US currency.]

COL Ted Mc LTC Stephen F. CPT (Join to see) TSgt Hunter Logan I never heard of her before the last few days. During this time in history Clara Bartan redefined the role of women in the nursing field to help save countless lives on both sides of the Civil War.
The impact on the nursing field is still with us today over 150 years later

SGM David W. Carr LOM, DMSM MP SGT Harriet Tubman was an abolitionist who helped rescue slaves in the pre-civil war days as well as during the Civil War. As somebody who went against the status quo of her time in supporting true freedom from slavery I applaud her.

SGM David W. Carr LOM, DMSM MP SGT - Sergeant Major; Indeed, Ms. Barton did much to redefine the role of women in the nursing field in the United States of America. The chance that she was not influenced by the actions of Florence Nightingale during the Crimean War (1853-6) is negligible.
