Thanks SGT John " Mac " McConnell for mentioned Charles Devens and providing a link to a summary of his life and times. His struggles with returning fugitive slave Thomas sims to slavery in 1851 speak volumes about his character.
He distinguished himself in the US Civil War and was promoted after the fact to Brevet MG for his role in capturing Richmond, VA beginning April3, 1865 where he established order and treated the populace with respect while his forces put out the fires.

I was Stationed at Ft. Devens.. 1984-1986. Interesting note... Ft. Devens was a POW camp during WWII, and there are German and Italian Prisoners buried on the Cemetery there. Also I was told by a friend of our family that his Father was held the as a POW, and ended up coming back to live in America after the war.
