Why would the Army be responsible for searching for an AWOL soldier in CONUS CPT Aaron Kletzing. I can understand why the military forces would conduct a personnel search in a combat zone or a country where the SOFA authorizes an off post search.
If the Army had conducted a search for this suspect off post civil libertarians and the ACLU would be up in arms.
I am glad that Pvt. Jameson T. Hazelbower was apprehended with out incident near his home town by local police.

Well, it looks like the unit did their part in reporting him and then the DFR 30 days later. The problem is the Military really has no way of tracking these Soldiers down. I had a case back in 2000 of a guy that was returned to Military control after being AWOL since 1975. I can imagine the AWOL and Deserter rolls are large. The gentleman that I work with that handles AWOL and Deserter Control is a one man band, and trust me it is not a job I would want to have to deal with. Installation Units, MP's, Civilian Authorities, etc.

The article says, ". . . .he was suspected of raping a 15-year-old girl."

On my soapbox now: We don't hear nor read much about male rapists selecting other men to sexually assault. The following is taken from an article called, "Sexual Assault Against Men."

"The Pentagon estimated that 26,000 service members experienced unwanted sexual contact in 2012, rising from 19,000 in 2010. Of those cases, the Pentagon says, most involved attacks on men, predominantly by other men. Recent statistics show that in terms of number of assaults, 'the majority of the victims are men."

I write the following based upon my experiences during a seven week military sexual trauma group at the Bay Pines VAMC in Florida.

Men assaulting other men is mostly a secret and sexual assaults against men are largely underreported. Men being raped by other men in the military is very shameful for the victims and men who have been sexually assaulted are often confused, questioning their sexual identity and sexual orientation. Quite simply, they wonder if they are homosexual.

In one military sexual trauma group, a victim, a sailor in The United States Navy, said that he was raped at gunpoint but had an orgasm during the assault. He expressed confusion wondering if his orgasm somehow confirmed that he was homosexual. He had been harboring this wondering for years.

He (and all of in the group) was told that a man can have an orgasm secondary to having his prostate stimulated and this can take place during a rape. We were told that the prostate being stimulated to an orgasm has nothing to do with sexual identity and sexual orientation.

Male sexual assault victims wonder if rapists think that the victims "act feminine" and that the victims "attract" rapists. Male sexual assault victims often have more confusion than female sexual assault victims because male-to-male sexual activity is considered homosexual in our society and in our culture.
