When the British saw the ritual killing of women in India in a pyre (sati), they found it barbaric. During the British Raj, in 1827 the Governor-General of India, Lord Bentinck, finally outlawed the custom in its entirety, claiming it had no sound theological basis (James 1998). Today, Indian men I work with, also consider the practice of sati barbaric.

Sometimes outsiders have to become the change they hope to inspire. SFC Charles Martland is a hero in my opinion.

I thought that we were supposed to free the people from oppression and win their hearts and mind. We cannot make that happen when the people we are suppose help are still being oppressed while we stand and watch.
