While I agree that the kids today have little appreciation for their freedoms, I disagree with mandatory service. I think it should be mandatory to gain US Citizenship. A sort of "You love this country so much you want to be a citizen, prove it in her defense." I think that kids today should be forced to take a citizenship test like those who migrate here and wish to become citizens. It will force them to pay more attention to what it really means to be an American. If they fail, then they are considered American Domestic Aliens until they pass the citizenship test.

The Swiss have a mandatory service requirement for their citizens. My nephew became a Swiss citizen after serving. He has his issued, select-fire assault weapon in the closet in his apartment. Switzerland is a safe, homogenous, healthy and affluent country. Though they have four official languages, English fluency is promoted, and when it comes to military service, it is required. As to requiring military service for US citizenship, you have a large number of persons who already have violated immigration and employment laws. These persons assume false identities and often lie to be able to stay and work in the US. Is that what you want in our military?
