Keep a diary. Yes, you. Start today. You will not remain in one job, at one employer, or even in one career. Maybe your father did. Maybe your grandfather. Not you. You're going to need to market yourself many times. Not aggrandize yourself. Not brag about yourself. Market. Advertise. Promote. It's going to feel uncomfortable at times because we're taught to be humble. Blessed are the humble. No. The humble may inherit the earth but they're not going to get the job. You're going to need data. Data to show where you've been. To show where you're going. To show not only what you can do but how you strive always to learn more. To be more valuable. That's what the diary is for. Forget depending on your memory. Memory forgets...

My struggle was always in how do I promote myself in real time without bragging. I never had any issues listing everything for an evaluation or an award. But by nature, I am more introverted so talking about all my unit/sections were doing was not easy. That too can hurt a person, especially when paired with peers who would do that. I think that did hurt me on evaluations, especially where the senior rater did not have a lot of day to day visibility on what I was doing.

Bragging is when other people find your self-promotion annoying...in much the same way it's annoying when a dog humps your leg.
