Over 30 years of military service in the U.S. Coast Guard, and active involvement on a number of military-related nonprofit service organizations, government-appointed positions in the area of homeland security, military transitioning, education and career opportunities, support for military families and veterans. Retired as the 8th Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard.

As the service’s top senior enlisted leader and ombudsman, served as the principal advisor to the Commandant of the Coast Guard, his directorates, and the Secretaries of Transportation and Defense, with primary focus on quality of life issues, career development, work environment and personnel matters affecting over 40,000 active duty, reserve enlisted, and civilian personnel servicewide. Routinely addressed these specific issues before appropriate Senate and House committees in Congress, and the ‘Commander-in-Chief,’ along with the senior enlisted counterparts of the other four military services. Served as member of Board of Visitors for USCG Academy (1999-2002).

During Coast Guard career, served aboard three various Coast Guard cutters, sailing Atlantic & Pacific oceans, with cumulative service of over five years at sea. Assignments both afloat and ashore covered locations in NY, WA state, AK, CA, NJ, DC and the Great Lakes and Caribbean regions. Directly participated in more than 50 search and rescue cases that resulted in saving lives and property at sea. Qualified law enforcement boarding officer. Served as the senior enlisted advisor to Joint Task Force-160 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba during Operation Support Democracy in 1994-96, which was the largest alien migration operation in history. Over the course of the 30 year career, visited 33 countries, including military areas of conflict Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan.
