I enlisted in the summer of 1990 hoping to serve as a Combat Engineer making way for those moving into Iraq. By 1992, I'd met enough Marines returning from the Persian Gulf to know we were gunning for a former ally equipped with chemical weapons as that seemed a good response to the Soviet military buildup during the Cold War. I'd find myself more concerned with terrorist provocation from then on.
