Teletypewriter Repairman
1st 6 mos. I was driver for my Battalion Commander. Last 6 months, I worked in my MOS as a Teletypewriter Repairman. "Highlights" during my tour were:
1. Lam Son 719. We reopened Route 9 all the way to the Laos border for an invasion by the ARVN to "cut" the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Congress prevented US ground troops from entering Laos, but Nixon & Kissinger provided massive amounts of air & arty for the ARVN by American troops relocated around.Khe Sanh and Route 9. Read elsewhere the disastrous results of Lam Son and Vietnamization.
2. Typhoon Hester, October,, 1971. This one storm did far more damage to the base at Chu Lai than the VC had been able to accomplish in all the years the base had been there. We were preparing to turn the base over to the ARVN. instead it was abandonned.
