Bio
COLONEL Jeffrey H. Powell, II began his military service enlisting in the United States Army in August, 1988 as a 98G Signal Voice Interceptor serving in the 313th Military Intelligence Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division. In the spring of 1990, Colonel Powell was accepted to the United States Military Academy Preparatory School and in 1991 he won an appointment to the United States Military Academy (USMA). He graduated and was commissioned a Lieutenant in Armor from USMA in 1995.
Upon completion of the Armor Officer Basic Course, Colonel Powell served as a tank platoon leader and tank company executive officer in 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division. Colonel Powell deployed in support of OPERATION DESERT MAVERICK 1996 (Kingdom of Jordan) and INTRINSIC ACTION 98-01 (Kuwait). In 1998, Colonel Powell volunteered for assignment to United States Forces Korea and served in 1st Battalion, 72nd Armor Regiment, 1st BDE, 2nd Infantry Division, as the Battalion Adjutant.
Upon completion of the Infantry Captain’s Career Course and the Combined Arms Services and Staff School, in March 2000, Colonel Powell was assigned to 4th Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division (Fort Stewart), where he served as an Assistant Operations Officer, Commander, Bravo Company, and Commander, Headquarters and Headquarters Company HHC. During his time in 2nd Brigade he deployed in support of OPERATION JOINT FORGE (Bosnia) and OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM (Invasion).
Colonel Powell served at the National Training Center as an Observer/Controller with the Tarantula Team (Light/Airborne Task Force Training Team) from 2003-2005. In 2005, he was re-assigned to Battle Command Training Program, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas serving as an Operations Officer, Observer/Trainer, and Adjutant.
After graduating from both Intermediate Level Education and the School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) in 2008, Colonel Powell was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii as the G5, Chief of Plans. He served in that position from June 2008 – July 2009 including OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM 09-11. In July 2009, Colonel Powell was assigned as the Squadron Executive Officer for 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team serving in Balad, Iraq. In May 2010, Colonel Powell became the Secretary of the General Staff for 25th Infantry Division serving in that position through OPERATION NEW DAWN 11-01(Baghdad, Iraq).
Colonel Powell assumed command of 5th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment in February 2012. The Squadron has been at the forefront of rearming and refitting our Nation’s Army, fielding the most modern Cavalry Fighting Vehicles in the Summer of 2012, completing two qualification gunneries, and a rotation to the National Training Center. For the past five months, the Squadron has been assigned as part of the Regionally Aligned Force in support of AFRICA COMMAND executing missions to Gabon and Western Accord 2013 in Ghana.
Following command, Colonel Powell was assigned as the Executive Officer to the Superintendent of the United States Military Academy. During that time, he served as a liaison between the Office of the Chief of Staff of the Army, Congress, and the Association of Graduates. It was a developmental year, where he learned the intricacies of policy, politics, and artful communication.
Colonel Powell was selected for Senior Service College and was subsequently assigned to attend the Advanced Strategic Leadership Studies Program at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Upon completion of the one year Military Masters Program in Strategic Studies, Colonel Powell served as the Military Instructor for the aforementioned fellowship.
Colonel Powell now serves as the Chief of Future Operations, America’s First Corps, Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
Colonel Powell has earned numerous awards and decorations, to include the Bronze Star Medal (with two oak leaf clusters), the Meritorious Service Medal (with four oak leaf clusters), the Army Commendation Medal (with three oak leaf clusters), the Army Achievement Medal (with six oak leaf clusters), the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Combat Action Badge, and the Parachutist Badge.
