Commander Benjamin Wetherill received his commission through the United States Coast Guard Reserve Officer Candidate Indoctrination Program. Prior to commissioning he served as a Military Police Officer with the ARIZONA NATIONAL GUARD 855th MILITARY POLICE COMPANY and as a Port Security Petty Officer with the COAST GUARD COLORADO RIVER PATROL where he served as a Boarding Officer. He has completed multiple tours of duty primarily in the Coast Guard Marine Safety community ashore. He began his commissioned service as a Division Officer and the San Diego Port Readiness Committee Facilitator at MARINE SAFETY OFFICE SAN DIEGO, CA from 1995 to 2002. In 2002 he transferred to Maine where he served as a Planning Officer at MARINE SAFETY OFFICE PORTLAND, ME which would later become SECTOR NORTHERN NEW ENGLAND until 2008. In 2008 he began his association with the United States Navy becoming a plank owner during his tour of duty of NAVAL COASTAL WARFARE SQUADRON TWENTY-ONE, MARITIME EXPEDITIONARY SECURITY SQUADRON EIGHT, and COASTAL RIVERINE SQUADRON EIGHT where he served as the Weapons Officer, Anti-Terrorism and Force Protection Officer and deployed to the United Arab Emirates in 2011. In his last assignment he served at MARITIME EXPEDITIONARY SECURITY SQUADRON TWELVE where he was the Coast Guard Senior Reserve Officer and Planning Officer N-5 for the unit.
Commander Benjamin Wetherill holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Arizona State University and a Master of Divinity Degree from Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. He has also attended the United States Military Academy, Phoenix College, and Arizona Western College as well as completing his advanced education at the National Defense University and the Naval War College.
In his civilian career, he is a retired Supervisory Border Patrol Agent with the United States Border Patrol last stationed at Douglas, Arizona Border Patrol Station. He is certified as a Law Enforcement Chaplain and is a member of the International Conference of Police Chaplains, the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation and the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress Certified as an Expert in Traumatic Stress (BCETS), Acute Trauma Stress Management (CATSM), and Board Certified as a Crisis Chaplain (BCCC). He is also an instructor in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu having earned his black belt in 2021.
