MSG(Ret) James C. Varenhorst II entered the United States Army in June 1983 at Fort Knox, Kentucky where he completed One Station Unit Training (OSUT) and was awarded 19E10 M48/60 Armor Crewman as his military occupational specialty (MOS). He later Went through New Equipment Training (NETT) and gained the MOS of 19K20 M1 Armor Crewman and additional NETT training and was awarded the MOS of 19K40K4 M1A2 Separate Enhancement Package (SEP). While assigned to the US Army Corps of Engineers as a Plans NCO for the Transatlantic Programs Center, MSG(Ret) Varenhorst completed Carpentry and Masonry Specialist School and was awarded the MOS of 21H40 Construction Supervisor and once promoted to MSG was awarded the MOS of 21X50 General Construction Supervisor. He retired from active duty June 2009.
During his career he has held a multitude of positions. These positions include: Calvary Scout, Tank Driver, Tank Loader, Tank Gunner, Tank Commander, Tank Section Sergeant, Tank Platoon Sergeant, M1 Tank Platoon and Company Master Gunner, Unit Supply Sergeant, Unit Clerk, Battalion Military Intel Specialist, Company Training NCO, Plans NCO, Operations NCO, Operations NCOIC, Test and Evaluation NCO, Redeployment NCOIC, Battalion Rear Detachment 1SG and Battalion Operations Sergeant.
His military education includes: OSUT (M60 Armor Crewman), PLDC (AC), Combat Lifesaver Course, NETT (M1), Tank Commander Certification Course, M1 Unit Conduct of Fire Trainer (UCOFT) Course, Tank Crew Evaluator (TCE) Course, 19K BNCOC (RC), and NETT (M1A2 SEP), 19K ANCOC (AC), Carpentry and Masonry Specialist School, he also has completed military correspondence courses in Army Precommission Course, Physical Security Course, Petroleum Supply Specialist Course, Civil Disturbance Course, Reenlistment NCO Course, NCO Basic Leadership Subject Course, and NCO Primary Leadership Subject Course. MSG Varenhorst has an Associate degree of Applied Art and Science (Criminal Justice) plus an Additional year of college through Central Texas College and Southside Virginia Community College.
His awards and decorations include the Combat Action Badge, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal(4olc), the Army Achievement Medal(4olc), Good Conduct Medal(4th awd), National Defense Service Medal (w/star), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraqi Campain Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (w/M device), Noncommissioned Officer Development Ribbon(w/#3, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service ribbon(w/#5), Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Superior Unit Award(1olc), and Driver Badge-Track.
Additional Skills include: NAUI certified Open Water Diver, PADI certified Advance Open Water Diver, PADI Medic course, and PADI certified Rescue Diver. MSG(Ret) Varenhorst also has a Michigan CDL Class B Licence with air brakes plus P and S endorsments.
