Started at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard as an outside marine machinist apprentice February 1987. Retrofitted aircraft carriers (SLEP program) until shipyard closed in 1995.Primary duties included fabrication of parts, mill work on ships catapults and removing arresting gear.

Assigned as an equipment operator prior to deployment to Okinawa. Sent to a civilian trucking business to learn how to repaint and repair all equipment stock on the island. While deployed to Okinawa our unit NMCB-3 was sent on barges to a small Air Force base, worked in conjunction with a marine unit to blast coral and move large quantities in order for the observation tower to observe practice gunning runs from airplanes.
