I spent 4 year, 8 months & 6 days in the US Army. I started out on a 3 year hitch and after 8 months in I took a 4 year short. I started out as a helicopter mechanic (rivet puncher) went to Jump School and ended up in the 82nd ABN, 3rd Bn, 504 Inf at Ft. Bragg. I was supposed to go to an Aviation unit but I ended up as a grunt. I loved the Airborne but I wasn't trained as a grunt and doing it OJT and going to Nam as a grunt didn't appeal to my longevity on planet earth! I took a short to get my MOS back and went to Italy for a year and a half. Then I went to Vietnam in 1970. I was stationed in Qui Nhon with the 540th Trans. Co. After my year was up I went to Ft. Lewis for a year and a half until my ETS in August 1972.
