Bio
My Navy Nuke ET education has done me well to get me this far in life. I got out of the nuclear energy industry when I got out of the Navy. Yet, through all the experience, I'm considering going back to school for a degree in cyber security. I am intrigued by the work of certified ethical hackers and might be looking for a way into that as my next thing.
Network Engineer, have held Microsoft MCSE (NT 4) and Cisco CCNA certifications, currently hold a Juniper Networks JNCIA-JunOS certification, and working toward higher level security certifications. I've been involved with personal computer hardware since high school (the mid-80s). I'm also an extra class ham radio operator (licensed in 1989). I do some shell scripting and Perl coding to help make my life as an engineer easier as well.
Military Experiences
Apr 1992 - Apr 1995
RC-01 Division Nub thru LPO
My first and only sea command - I reported aboard while she was in Bremerton, WA for a DSRA in April, 1992. Worked on basic engineering quals where I could (ship was in Bremerton / dry dock until October 1992), then in-rate quals as we made it back home to San Diego. One short CrackPAC cruise early in 1993 (8 weeks), and I was qualified RO around the end of that cruise. Finished SRO before the 6-month CrackPAC deployment and home port change. Went through several inspections, a P-ORSE and ORSE, and then did the final shutdown check-offs as the duty Reactor Technician on CGN-9 in May, 1994 when we pulled into Norfolk (home port change at the end of the last CrackPAC for decomm). I did some TAD time running housing, then got out early in 1995 (Clinton-era downsizing).
Deployments
(7 months)Nov 1993 - May 1994
Mediterranean
RC-01 Division Material History PO, then WCS, then LPO. Senior-In-Rate Qualified (SCW, EO, SEO, RO, SRO), and Reactor Technician. Volunteered with the topside ETs to run the MARS station (NNN0CLB) when the ops guys tolerated us to operate on HF frequencies (our station would often drive the SLQ-32s batty).
