Drafted in 1965 into US Army went to Benning for BCT the Ft Sill for Holding for Artillery OCS serveral months finally discovered vision requirement made me unfit for combat arms but guess what I was qualified for Ordnance OCS [can we say defuse bombs]. Went through 17 weeks and had accident wound up with concussion [no bomb explosion] recovery time lengthy so they generously offered me a restart at day 1 of new class. Declined and guess what I was qualified for combat arms as Fire Direction Chief Artillery Battery South Vietnam. Had lessthan a year but I'm glad I went Met some of the finest men on the planet lost some most came back icluding me! God works in mysterious ways!

Chief FDC HEavy artillery battery
FDC chief plus alternate BN FDC. Inroduced computer [FADAC] ino theater [not much help]. Our 8" howitzer was the most accurate weapon the artillery ever had before smart rounds. Our unit could literally drop it in your hip pocket at max range. Many times we had to fire danger close for troops needing help and our battery was the only on that could reach them. We really had to sharpen our pencils on those especially when they were whispering to us. Made us feel great when we dropped the rounds right where they needed them! That's why we were there.

Vietnam War
Ran FDC for 8" Heavy SP Artillery Battery and alternate Battalion consisting of 3 other batteries of 6 each 155mm guns. We were mostly in the field as one battery sometimes 2 taking care of business and manning our own perimeter. AO for us TAY Ninh to Parrots beak, Nu Bau Din, down almost to the Delta and all of War zone c, d Iron Triangle, etc.
