Military Experiences

May 1982 - Apr 1985
M113A2 APC Driver/RTO & M35A2 (DUCE) 2 1/2 ton Truck Driver
Started as 1st. Platoon leaders M113A2 driver/RTO. Ended tour in HQ platoon as the 1st. Sergeant's M35A2 (DUCE) driver. I rememder we where known as the Ranger Battalion. Also remember we had 2 old half tracks that still ran. 1 was out in front of battalion HQ and that was an old Anti Aircraft gun platform that mounted quad 50 cal. M2 Browning machine guns. We painted that one a nice glossy black with the Battalion crest painted on both sides. 2nd. was located in front of Bravo Company. That one was a M16 troop carrier. We painted that on in a forest camo pattern. Maintenance folks let me drive both around the parade field when they did PM on them. I helped paint & maintain them both, that was a fun project. Also had a nice time visiting England, Wales and Ireland with a group from church.
1982 - 1985
Infantryman and Driver/RTO
Was assigned to 1st Platoon as a M113A2 Driver/RTO. Can't remember which squad I was assigned to. Well didn't much matter because as soon as the 1st Sergeant heard about me it was off to HQ Platoon as his M35A2 Driver/RTO. Again with hauling supplies all over West Germany and again with hauling that mess trailer around and helping set up the Battalion mess. This 1st Sergeant would keep me parked with the mess until he would drive down with the jeep and we would load chow and ammo to resupply each of the platoons every day. 2/36 was an interesting assignment.
Dec 1980 - Apr 1982
M35A2 (DUCE) 2 1/2 ton Truck Driver
Remember training ROTC cadets. Started out with first platoon as a RTO and then moving to HQ platoon to drive the DUCE for the First Sargent. We where known as the Alpha Gators.
1980 - 1982
Infantryman and Driver/RTO
First stateside assignment not including Basic or AIT. Started in 1st Platoon as an M60 gunner, then the Platoon Leaders RTO when he found out I knew how to operate a PRC77 and do code. That was fun hauling that radio around on my back. Later the 1st Sargent got wind of my talents and he moved me to HQ Platoon as a M35A2 2 1/2 truck driver and his RTO. Would haul the Battalion mess trailer around during FTXs and again with the personnel shortage and helping maintain other Company vehicles. Of course I would be lent out to Battalion to drive for them as needed. Had a nice time doing arctic training at Fort Drum one year. Loved driving on the ice with those trucks. Also drove to Camp Reilia Oregon for survival training. Got orders to rotate back to West Germany again....fun times at Lewis.
