Staff Sergeant Kornegay was born in Okinawa in 1982. He graduated from Southern Wayne High School in May and joined the United States Army in June 2001 out of Goldsboro, NC. He attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Lenardwood, Missouri where he soon followed on to report to Fort Lee, Virginia for Advanced Individual Training for the skill set of becoming a Food Service Specialist.
In Dec 2001, Staff Sergeant Kornegays reported to his first duty assignment which was with 1/72nd Armored Regiment on Camp Casey Korea. From there, he reported to 528th Special Operations Support Battalion where he would deploy three times to Afghanistan and once to Thailand for a training exercise called Cobra Gold. During his assignment there his duties would have him supporting myriad of the United States’ Special Operation units. In 2005, His next duty assignment with 3rd Battalion; 7th SFG(A) would take him to Fort Benning where he join the ranks of an “elite brotherhood” known as Airborne. SSG Kornegay quickly learned 3/ 7th SFG optempo which would present new challenges working outside the realm of foodservice. As Battalion Movement and Service Detachment NCO, SSG was charged with obtaining transport for various teams and moving equipment belong to the Battalion in and out of training rotations and deployments. SSG Kornegay would deploy three more times to Afghanistan and once to Columbia with 7th SFG (A) lending support in remote locations to multiple Operational Detachment Alphas (ODAs). Presently, SSG Kornegay is serving as Food Management NCO in the South of the Alps Dining Facility in Vicenza Italy. Assigned to E Company of the 1/503rd Infantry Battalion, SSG Kornegay would once again deploy to Afghanistan. While there SSG Kornegay would get promoted to Staff Sergeant, receive numerous coins from the Command of D Company; 1st Infantry Division, and lastly meet and receive a coin from the Sergeant Major of the Army; Raymond Chandler III.
SSG Kornegay has currently completed 44 credit hours toward his degree in Hospitality Management. He also earned the certification of a Certified Food Manager which demonstrates basic knowledge in the following areas: general industry knowledge, basic cooking, beverages and wines, dining room set-up and service, menu development, sanitation, purchasing, accounting, management, and human resources.
