Our unit served with both MAG-15 when I arrived and was later transferred to MAG-12 when MAG-15 was deployed to Nam Phoung, Thailand. I worked my primary duties as a radar tech until I was hurt in December of 1972. After 3 months at the Naval hospital at Yokosuka, Japan, I was medivaced back to the naval hospital in Philadelphia, Pa.
Jan 1971 - Mar 1972
ATC Radar Technician
My first duty station after C school, for the first 2 months I worked on the air base's FPN-36 precision GCA radar. It was an older technology, tubes based system. In the beginning of my 3rd month on the base I was TAD to MATCU-78 on the other side of the runway from the main air base. There I worked on the TPN-8 precision/surveillance radar. MATCU-78 was redesignated MATCU-68 in the summer of 1971 when some of the Marine units started returning from Vietnam. I was sent back to H&HS during my last 2 months at the air station before receiving WESTPAC orders to Japan.
