Gene Maestas, Public Affairs Specialist
Gene currently serves as the Public Affairs Specialist at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific “Punchbowl”. He manages the media, social media, community, international, and government relations programs for the NMCP. He is the primary point of contact for the press, government officials, military leaders and foreign consulates. He is responsible for the coordination and execution of major National, International and civic memorial events.
His experience includes 30 years with the United States Coast Guard where he served as a Photo Journalist, Public Affairs Specialist, Information Officer, Public Affairs Officer and External Affairs Officer.
He served as the External Affairs Officer for the Fourteenth Coast Guard District that encompasses 47 Pacific Island Nations and expands 12.2 million square miles. He also served as the External Affairs Officer for the Fifth Coast Guard District that encompasses 7 states in the Mid-Atlantic Region to include the National Capital Region.
Before serving as an External Affairs Officer he served with the Coast Guard National Strike Force as Supervisor of the Public Information Assist Team. This 4-person crisis communication team is responsible for supporting Federal on Scene Commanders during incidents of National Significance. Gene responded to several airline tragedies, oil spills, chemical releases, earthquakes, hurricanes and other manmade and natural disasters.
Gene studied communications at Tulane University, international affairs at Mitchell College, marine biology at the University of West Indies, phycology at the University of New Mexico and played soccer at St. Joseph’s College.
Gene is married for 35-years and has a son and daughter.
