Bio
Luckily I graduated High School the year the televised Vietnam war ended. I knew I didn't want to be in the Army or Marines. I chose Air Force. The recruiter wasn't interested. Maybe he made his quota that month. The Navy accepted me. Honestly, I joined the Navy to serve myself, not to serve the United States. I was "up to hear" with school, and I didn't want to flip burgers. Done that.

Ocean Systems Technician Analyst
As an Ocean Systems Technician (OT), there was a slight chance I'd be assigned to a ship. Fortunately, the NAVY "ordered me" to serve at U.S. Naval Facility (NAVFAC) Brawdy, in Wales, U.K. It was my 3rd pick on my "dream sheet". Very glad the Navy chose Wales for me. I was much better suited to shore duty. Technically, I PASSED the Boot Camp swim test, but I'm no fish.
Being in Wales also led to once-in-a-lifetime travel experiences, including a one month trip on the trains (Eurailpass) in western Europe in May 1979. My photo includes the beer can collection I had accumulated while in Wales. It's not fare that my four years were "a paid vacation", BUT if the COLD War had turned HOT between Sept '76 and Jan. '80, our NAVFAC would have been nuked by the Soviet Union.
