I worked as a generator mechanic for the mostly 400-cycle generators that ran the radar vans. At the time of my arrival until sometime late in 1974 MACS-5 Radar was not hooked up to commercial power. We ran banks of generators. I think that we ran as many as 6-Detroit Diesel powered 400-cycle generators at high idle all day long. The noise was deafening, but we could service them while they ran. After being hooked up to commercial power, we twiddled our thumbs quite a bit.

Life at sea could be quite boring but crossing the Atlantic at night was marvelous. Between the night sky and the luminescence of the sea, it was beautiful. First port of call was Malaga, Spain and got very drunk. Next port was Athens on my birthday. A lovely ancient city and had fun at the Parthenon. Landed in Turkey, set up our radar and generator at the top of the hill. On the way up it was like going through a time machine. The people lived in a very spartan manner. I was just a mushroom and did not know that the Yom Kippur War had broken out. We went to Livorno Italy after the NATO exercise to unload. We intended to go to Beirut to evacuate American's but that did not materialize. We were on DEFCON 3 for some time and stood gun watch. Headed home to the 1st gas crisis.

I worked on 350 GPM pumps that pumped jet fuel to the flightline for MAG-15's two F-4 squadrons, an A-6 squadron and KC-130 refueler squadron. I also performed Bulk Fuelman duties. As a snuffy I also drove a deuce and a half and the company jeep. I also had my share of burning shitters.
