I have had the privilege of serving as a lieutenant (O-3) in the USPHS Commissioned Corps from 2002 to 2010, conducting research at the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. (The USPHS Commissioned Corps is the branch that provides medical services to and deploys with the Coast Guard.)
